How many rounds of chemo can a person have?
You may need four to eight cycles to treat your cancer.
A series of cycles is called a course.
Your course can take 3 to 6 months to complete — and you may need more than one course of chemo to beat the cancer..
How long does a chemo treatment stay in your body?
The chemotherapy itself stays in the body within 2 -3 days of treatment but there are short-term and long-term side effects that patients may experience. Not all patients will experience all side effects but many will experience at least a few.
Can chemotherapy be given indefinitely?
If the disease shrinks but does not disappear, chemotherapy will continue as long as it is tolerated and the disease does not grow. If the disease grows, the chemotherapy will be stopped.
Does chemo actually extend life?
Chemo can extend life for weeks or months. It can also make the recipient feel nauseated, wiped out and generally lousy, and require him to spend more time in clinics and hospitals than a dying person might choose to. But it can’t banish cancer. Many aspects of medical prognosis and treatment are uncertain.
Do you ever fully recover from chemotherapy?
The rule of thumb I usually tell my patients is that it takes about two months of recovery time for every one month of treatment before energy will return to a baseline. Everyone is different but at least this gives you a ballpark. This is a lot longer than most people assume.
How long can you be on chemo?
Chemotherapy is often given for a specific time, such as 6 months or a year. Or you might receive chemotherapy for as long as it works. Side effects from many drugs are too severe to give treatment every day.
